WHERE WE WORK
The East Durham LEADER area comprises 30 wards extending across 114 square miles. Although Durham County Council is now a unitary authority, the LEADER boundaries are based upon the old 'districts', comprising all of Easington, parts of Durham City and Sedgefield, and two wards from the City of Sunderland. The area is bounded by the A1 motorway in the west, the North sea to the east and the 'city region' conurbations of Tyne & Wear and Tees Valley to the north and south respectively.

The LEADER approach is one of the delivery mechanisms for the RDPE (Rural Development Programme for England. The East Durham LEADER area is split between rural wards (17) and urban wards (13). It was agreed during the development stage that the urban wards offer increased service provision, are important for the viability and sustainability of the smaller areas and that their exclusion would fragment the cohesiveness of the area. The guidance documents state that activity can be funded in the urban wards as long as the primary beneficiaries are within the rural communities.

If you are unsure whether you project will be eligible for East Durham LEADER support, please contact us for further guidance.
