DURHAM DEAFENED SUPPORT GROUP
Durham Deafened Support Group was established in 1998 to promote the relief, integration, rehabilitation, welfare and education of people who have become isolated because of hearing loss. The group enables them to cope with their disability through advocacy, support, education, information and other ways of helping them to understand and meet their communication needs.
Durham Deafened Support hosts 7 groups that meet within the community, all with a fully qualified lip reading teacher. The groups meet at local venues at Crook, Durham, Stanley, Spennymoor, Newton Aycliffe and two at Peterlee. Hands on Health worked with four of the groups during the summer of 2009.

The sessions were initially challenging as we had not worked with the hard of hearing before. The lip reading teacher gave us tips on how we should project ourselves to the group – making sure that we talked slowly and clearly.
Overall we worked with 40 members of the Durham Deafened Support Group. It was heartening to read their comments on the end of course evaluation forms:
‘The tutors are very helpful and understanding and very patient with me as it is hard being hearing impaired – thank-you very much.’
‘The course was informative. Did well to include people who would otherwise not have been able to do such a course.’
‘Enjoyed the four weeks, the tutor was very good and friendly. Helpful in all aspects of the work’.
